THE SEPTUAGINT, AND THE INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY

Shalom.

Today, we continue our studies in Torah, The Law of Moses, from The Book of Deuteronomy, The Fifth Book of The Torah, and The Fifth Book of The Bible.

And our teaching will come from Deuteronomy 1.1-8.

AND THE TITLE OF OUR MESSAGE IS, THE SEPTUAGINT, AND THE INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY.

And with that said, let’s read Deuteronomy 1.1-8.

The English name, Deuteronomy comes from the Septuagint, the oldest Greek version of The Bible which in those days, some 200 to 250 years before Messiah, The Bible was only The Tnakh, The Old Testament Scriptures.  The New Testament had not yet been written.  The Messiah Yeshua had yet to come.

Deuteronomy means Review of The Torah, or Review of The Law of Moses.

DEUTERONOMY 1.3, 5

How important to The LORD is His Torah, The Law of Moses? After forty years of being taught His Law in the wilderness, and even before His Jewish People entered their permanent Homeland, The Land of Israel, GOD emphasized the need to establish His Law in their lives by having Moses Review The Torah, GOD’S Law of Moses.

I think of the words of Paul.  Very important Words.  He writes, Is He The GOD of The Jews only?  Is He not also The GOD of The Gentiles?  Yes, of The Gentiles also.  Do we then make void The Law through faith?  GOD FORBID.  Indeed, we establish The Law.  ROMANS 3.29-31

That is a Commandment of GOD.  GOD Commands The Jewish People and The Gentile People to establish His Torah, His Law of Moses in your life.  It is written.  That never changes.  The Law of Moses never ends.  ISAIAH 40.8, 1 PETER 1.23-25

Let’s talk about the Septuagint.

When the Septuagint was written, Messiah Yeshua had not yet come as Messiah.  Earlier He appeared to the ancients of Judaism in Canaan and in Israel as YEHOVAH, EL SHADDAI, I AM THAT I AM, I AM, THE ANGEL OF THE LORD, MELCHIZEDEK, ELOHIM, AND CAPTAIN OF THE HOST OF THE LORD.

GENESIS 12.7, GENESIS 14.18-20, HEBREWS 7.1-3, GENESIS 17.1, JOHN 8.39-40, 56-58, GENESIS 26.1-2, GENESIS 28.12-13, HEBREW BIBLE GENESIS 32.25-31, CHRISTIAN BIBLE GENESIS 32.24-30, EXODUS 3.1-4, EXODUS 33.11, JOSHUA 5.13-15, 1 SAMUEL 3.10-12, ISAIAH 6.1, HEBREW BIBLE ISAIAH 9.5, CHRISTIAN BIBLE ISAIAH 9.6, ETC.

WHEREVER YOU SEE THE LORD OR GOD, OR ANYWHERE HIS NAME IS WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE, THAT IS THE MESSIAH YESHUA, THE ONE GOD OF CREATION.

The name Septuaginta in Latin means seventy.  And the Septuagint is steep in legend for its beginnings.

Around 250 B.C.E./ B.C., Eleazar The High Priest in Jerusalem, at the command of the Egyptian Ruler Ptolemy Philadelphus, sent seventy-two Jewish Scholars from Jerusalem to Alexandria, Egypt to translate The Torah from Hebrew to Greek for the Royal Library.

And legend has it that the seventy-two Jewish Scholars, six from each of The Twelve Tribes of Israel, worked independently.  And being guided by Divine Inspiration, they finished simultaneously, and all the translations were identical.

According to the Church fathers, the seventy-two Jewish sages not only translated The Torah from Hebrew to Greek, but the whole Tnakh, the entire Old Testament Bible.

The Septuagint owes its existence to the fact that the growing Jewish population in Egypt had become Hellenized.  That is to say, The Jewish population of Egypt became Greek in character, as most American Jewish People become American in Character.  But for the most part, retain their Jewishness. So the Jewish population in Egypt needed a Greek translation of their Bible; The Torah, The Prophets and The Writings.

Legends of the Septuagint’s beginnings appear to contain some fact.  The Torah was probably translated into Greek by the seventy-two Jewish Scholars around 250 B.C.E./B.C.  While the Prophets and Writings were translated by other Jewish Scholars around 200 B.C.E.

In addition, the Septuagint contains translations of the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, books written by Jewish writers from The Second Temple period and the years following.

There is much varying thought from the Jewish Community about the Septuagint.  From inadequate, to the Septuagint being of utmost importance.

At first the Septuagint was viewed with favor by the Palestinian Rabbis.  Remember, the Romans changed Israel’s name that GOD ALMIGHTY named the Jewish Homeland to Palestine in 135 C.E./A.D. some 102 years after Messiah’s death.

The Hellenistic Jewish People revered the Septuagint. They even celebrated it in an annual celebration in honor of their Bible.

But after The Jewish Messiah’s death, many Jewish Believers in The Messiah Yeshua witnessed to The Jewish People from the Septuagint that The Messiah Yeshua was both THE JEWISH MESSIAH AND THE GOD OF ISRAEL, GOD ALMIGHTY.

Thus the Septuagint was rejected by many Jewish People. And even compared the Septuagint to the day the golden calf was made.  How sad.

Perhaps Jewish People rejected Scriptures such as Isaiah 9.5-6.  In the Christian Bible, Isaiah 9.6-7 that read, For unto us, (The Jewish People) a child is Born.  Unto us, (The Jewish People), a Son is given.  And the Government shall be upon His Shoulder.  And His Name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty GOD, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of The Greatness of His Government and Peace, there shall be no end upon The Throne of David, and upon His Kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from this time even forever.  The zeal of The LORD of Hosts will perform this.

Jewish People, not all, rejected these Prophetic Scriptures written in the Septuagint as Prophesy of The Messiah Yeshua being The Jewish Messiah and The Mighty GOD, The Everlasting Father.

But the same Scriptures of Truth are written in all Hebrew Tnakhs.  Because they are The Word of GOD, Written from the Original Bible Manuscript.  But unfortunately, with improper commentaries, and the occasional loose translation, many Jewish People reject those Prophesies even today.  They reject their Jewish Messiah.  And by rejecting their own Messiah, they reject their GOD, The Holy One of Israel.

Then there is Isaiah 52.13-15 through Isaiah 53.1-12 that speak of The Messiah Yeshua.  Those Scriptures in all likelihood were also rejected in the Septuagint.  But they are written in every Hebrew Tnakh Manuscript over the past thousands of years.  And again, many Jewish People say, Those Prophesies are not about The Messiah.  They concern Israel.

Those Prophetic Scriptures are about Messiah Yeshua and His death, burial and resurrection.  Not Israel.

And yes, Messiah Yeshua and Israel have much in common.

Both Messiah and Israel are Jewish.  Both Messiah and Israel are despised and rejected of men.  But both Messiah and Israel are also loved. Messiah was wounded and killed for our sins.  Israel was wounded and killed for her own sins.  Both were resurrected. Both Messiah and Israel live forever. Messiah was a Prophet. Israel had many Prophets.

Messiah and Israel live by Torah, and teach Torah.  Messiah teaches Torah through the Bible.  Israel teaches Torah through Law.  Messiah is King of Israel.  Many Jewish Kings were born in Israel as was Messiah.  Messiah is The Lawgiver. Israel is The Lawgiver to The Jewish People and to all mankind through The Bible.

But the difference is this. Messiah has no violence in Him. Israel must have violence to survive.  ISAIAH 53.9, ISAIAH 66.22

The Prophetic Scriptures of Isaiah 52.13-15 through Isaiah 53.1-12 are about The Jewish Messiah Yeshua.  Not Israel.

Another Scripture in the Septuagint that applies to Messiah Yeshua, but no doubt rejected by many Jewish People, even today, is Isaiah 7.14 that reads, Therefore The LORD Himself shall give you a sign.  Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel.

The virgin in Hebrew is Ha Almah.  A simple Bible study of this Almah will prove that Messiah was born of a virgin, a Jewish virgin by the name of Miriam.

Then there is the Prophesy of the exact time The Jewish Messiah Yeshua would come the first time.  That Prophesy is written in Daniel 9.20-27 and requires a little bit of Bible study.

Messiah came exactly at the time Prophesied by the Prophet Daniel.  And His Prophesy also points to the fact that The Messiah would be killed before the second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 C.E./A.D.  That too is rejected by many.

Add to that the Prophesy of The Prophet Micah that The Jewish Messiah Yeshua will be born in Bethlehem among the thousands of Judah, Who will be Ruler in Israel, Whose Origin is From Old, From Everlasting.

Meaning, Messiah Yeshua is GOD ALMIGHTY having no beginning or end.  And He was born in Beit L’khem.  That is written in Prophesy in Micah 5.1. In the Christian Bible, Micah 5.2.  Also rejected by many Jewish People in Septuagint times, and today.

Genesis 1.26, Let Us make man in Our Image, after Our Likeness, is understood by very few because of The Hebrew Word ELOHIM.  The Hebrew Word ELOHIM is written over 3,000 times in Tnakh, The Old Testament Scriptures about The GOD OF ISRAEL.

ELOHIM means GODS, GODS plural for the ONE GOD OF CREATION, THE GOD OF ISRAEL.  GOD refers to Himself often in the plural because HE IS GOD.  HE IS GOD THE FATHER, HE IS GOD THE MESSIAH YESHUA, HE IS GOD THE SON OF GOD, HE IS GOD THE SPIRIT, GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT, often THE ANGEL OF GOD, THE ANGEL OF THE LORD, MELCHIZEDEK, CAPTAIN OF THE HOST OF THE LORD, AND SO MANY MORE REVELATIONS OF HIMSELF.

ALL ARE ONE AND THE SAME GOD.

GOD IS THE JEWISH MESSIAH YESHUA.  AND THE JEWISH MESSIAH YESHUA IS GOD ALMIGHTY, THE CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH.

WHEREVER IT IS WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE, GOD, OR MESSIAH YESHUA, THE LORD, OR THE SPIRIT, OR THE HOLY SPIRIT, OR MELCHIZEDEK, OR THE SON OF GOD, THAT IS THE ONE GOD OF CREATION. THERE ARE NO OTHERS.  PROVERBS 30.4

As it turns out, the Septuagint is a wonderful Bible in Greek that was translated by the seventy or seventy-two Jewish Scholars from Jerusalem.

Why Jewish People reject their Messiah Yeshua is an amazement to me.  Because I was one of those Jewish People.  Until, while reading The Tnakh, The Old Testament Scriptures, I read in The New Testament that YESHUA IS THE MESSIAH.  And later on that HE IS GOD ALMIGHTY, THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL.  MATTHEW 1.16, JOHN 12.45, 49, JOHN 14.9

But The Bible gives us answers why so many Jewish People reject their MESSIAH YESHUA WHO IS HA SHEM ELOHIM.

Because Prophesy reads that The Messiah Yeshua will be despised and rejected of men.  ISAIAH 53.3

Men in Hebrew is EESHEEM, also meaning PEOPLE.  Jewish People and non-Jewish people.

I know that Messiah is despised by many Jewish People.  But He is not loved by most Gentile people.  Why?  Because Messiah says, Those who do not love Me do not keep My Sayings.  JOHN 14.24

Sayings in Greek is LOGOS meaning DOCTRINE AND WORDS. MESSIAH’S DOCTRINE AND WORDS.

MESSIAH YESHUA IS GOD ALMIGHTY.  And most people do not obey a Word GOD says because they believe that GOD’S Law of Moses is no longer in effect.  (They are taught that lie) Thus they live by none of The LORD’S Doctrine or any of His Words Spoken in The Bible.

But why do Jewish People reject their own Messiah?  The Bible has answers.

The Bible Prophesies that the Stone the builders rejected has become the Chief Corner Stone.  This is The LORD’s doing.  It is marvelous in our eyes.  PSALM 118.22-23

The Stone the builders rejected is their Messiah Yeshua.  The builders are the Jewish Religious Leaders.  But The Bible says, It is marvelous in our eyes.

And Messiah repeats the same words in MATTHEW 21.42

But why do so many Jewish People reject their Messiah?  The answer?  To bring Gentiles to Salvation.  ROMANS 11.11

If The Jewish Leadership had not given Messiah over to the Romans for death, There would be no atonement.

Messiah’s primary purpose at His first coming was to give His Life for the Atonement of His Jewish People and all the world. It is written.  ISAIAH 52.14-15, ISAIAH 53. 8-12, JOHN 10.11, JOHN 12.23-24, ETC.

But the time will come when the House of Israel will look upon Him, THEIR MESSIAH YESHUA whom we have pierced, and mourn for Him, and we will love Him.

That is when THE MESSIAH YESHUA, THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, HA SHEM ELOHIM brings His Jewish People into the Land of Israel at the beginning of the Messianic Kingdom on earth that will be like the Garden of Eden.  ISAIAH 51.3

And we will be with the LORD forever and ever. One thousand years in the Messianic Kingdom on earth in Israel that will be like the Garden of Eden, and forever with Him in THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.   ZECHARIAH 12.10

Shalom.
