WHAT DOES THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH MEAN IN GOD’S LAWS FOR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT?

SHALOM,

THIS COMING TUESDAY AT SUNDOWN THROUGH WEDNESDAY AT SUNDOWN IS YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.

AND GOD’S LAWS FOR THE DAY OF ATONEMENT ARE WRITTEN IN TORAH, THE LAW OF MOSES IN LEVITICUS 23.26-32.

AND THE TITLE OF OUR TEACHING IS, WHAT DOES THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH MEAN IN GOD’S LAWS FOR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT?

AND WITH THAT SAID, LET’S READ LEVITICUS 23.26-32, GOD’S LAWS FOR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.

VERSE 26  AND THE LORD SPOKE TO MOSES, SAYING,

VERSE 27  ALSO ON THE TENTH DAY OF THIS SEVENTH MONTH IS A DAY OF ATONEMENT.  IT SHALL BE A HOLY GATHERING TO YOU, AND YOU SHALL AFFLICT YOUR SOULS, AND OFFER AN OFFERING MADE BY FIRE UNTO THE LORD.

VERSE 28  AND YOU SHALL DO NO WORK IN THAT SAME DAY, FOR IT IS A DAY OF ATONEMENT TO MAKE ATONEMENT FOR YOU BEFORE THE LORD YOUR GOD.

VERSE 29  FOR ANY PERSON WHO IS NOT AFFLICTED IN THAT SAME DAY, THIS PERSON SHALL BE CUT OFF FROM AMONG HIS PEOPLE.

VERSE 30  AND ANY PERSON WHO DOES ANY WORK IN THIS SAME DAY, I SHALL DESTROY THAT PERSON FROM AMONG HIS PEOPLE.

VERSE 31  YOU SHALL DO NO MANNER OF WORK.  IT SHALL BE A STATUTE FOREVER THROUGHOUT YOUR GENERATIONS IN ALL YOUR DWELLINGS.

VERSE 32  IT IS TO YOU A SABBATH OF REST, AND YOU SHALL AFFLICT YOUR SOULS IN THE NINTH DAY OF THE MONTH AT EVENING, FROM EVENING TO EVENING YOU SHALL CELEBRATE YOUR SABBATH.

SO THE QUESTION IS, WHAT DOES THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH MEAN IN GOD’S LAWS FOR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT?

THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH MEANS, HUMBLE, OR HUMBLE YOURSELF OR AFFLICT, AFFLICTED OR AFFLICTION.

HUMBLE YOURSELF MEANS TO BE SUBMISSIVE, MEEK, NOT PROUD OR ARROGANT.  AND SUBMISSIVE MEANS INCLINED OR READY TO SUBMIT UNRESISTINGLY, OR HUMBLY OBEDIENT.

MOST BIBLES TRANSLATE THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH IN THESE VERSES FOR YOM KIPPUR TO MEAN, AFFLICT YOUR SOULS, OR AFFLICT YOURSELVES, BE HUMBLE, OR SELF DENIAL, OR DENY YOURSELVES.

BUT WITH THESE VERSES OF GOD’S LAWS FOR THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, JUDAISM HAS TAKEN THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH TO MEAN AFFLICT YOURSELF, OR PRACTICE SELF DENIAL BY FASTING.

I MAINTAIN THAT THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH IN GOD’S LAWS FOR THE DAY OF ATONEMENT DOES NOT MEAN TO AFFLICT YOURSELF BY FASTING.  BUT ON THE CONTRARY, GOD USES THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH TO MEAN, HUMBLE YOURSELF AND OBEY EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS.

LET’S LOOK AT LEVITICUS 23, VERSES 27, 29, AND 32 WHERE THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH IS TRANSLATED IN MOST BIBLES TO MEAN AFFLICT YOURSELF, HUMBLE YOURSELF, DENY YOURSELF, OR SELF DENIAL.

AGAIN, I MAINTAIN THAT THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH SPOKEN BY GOD IN HIS YOM KIPPUR LAWS MEANS HUMBLE YOURSELF BY SUBMITTING TO GOD.  BY OBEYING EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS IN THE BIBLE.

THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH IN THE BIBLE NEVER MEANS TO FAST.

GOD DOES NOT REQUIRE A FAST ON YOM KIPPUR.  BUT RATHER THE LORD REQUIRES HIS PEOPLE TO HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND SUBMIT TO THE LORD BY OBEYING EVERY WORD HE SPEAKS.

TORAH SAYS, MAN DOES NOT LIVE BY BREAD ONLY BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF THE LORD DOES MAN LIVE.  DEUTERONOMY 8.3

FASTING IS NOT A COMMANDMENT OF GOD.

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JEWISH COMMENTATORS IN JEWISH HISTORY ON TNAKH, THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, AND TALMUD IS RABBI SHLOMO YITZCHAKI WHO IS BETTER KNOWN AS RASHI.  RASHI WAS BORN IN FRANCE IN 1040.

AND RASHI SAID, YOU SHALL AFFLICT IS THE TORAH TERM FOR FASTING.

I RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE.  THE TORAH TERM,  YOU SHALL AFFLICT DOES NOT MEAN FASTING.

IN GOD’S LAWS FOR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, THE TERM, YOU SHALL AFFLICT, OR DENY YOURSELF, MEANS, YOU SHALL BE HUMBLE BY OBEYING GOD, BY OBEYING EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS.

BUT SINCE RASHI SAID THAT YOU SHALL AFFLICT IS THE TORAH TERM FOR FASTING, I RESEARCHED THE SCRIPTURE VERSES IN TORAH, THE LAW OF MOSES, WHERE THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH FOR AFFLICT OR DENY IS WRITTEN AND NEVER MEANS TO FAST.

HERE ARE SOME VERSES IN TORAH THAT USE THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH THAT MEANS EITHER HUMBLE YOURSELF OR AFFLICT YOURSELF, OR AFFLICTED, BUT NEVER MEANING TO FAST.

EXODUS 10.3  AND MOSES AND AARON WENT TO PHARAOH AND SAID TO HIM, THUS SAITH THE LORD, THE GOD OF THE HEBREWS, HOW LONG WILL YOU REFUSE TO HUMBLE YOURSELF BEFORE ME.  LET MY PEOPLE GO THAT THEY MAY SERVE ME?

THE WORD HUMBLE IN THIS VERSE COMES FROM THE HEBREW LAY’AH’NOTE THAT COMES FROM THE HEBREW AH’NAH MEANING HUMBLE.

GOD DID NOT ASK PHARAOH WHY HE IS NOT FASTING BEFORE THE LORD.  GOD ASKED PHARAOH, HOW LONG DO YOU REFUSE TO HUMBLE YOURSELF BEFORE ME?  HOW LONG DO YOU REFUSE TO SUBMIT YOURSELF BEFORE ME?

GENESIS 15.13  AND HE (GOD) SAID TO ABRAM, KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE A STRANGER IN A LAND THAT IS NOT THEIRS, AND SHALL SERVE THEM, AND THEY SHALL AFFLICT THEM FOUR HUNDRED YEARS.

THE WORDS, AND THEY SHALL AFFLICT, COME FROM THE HEBREW V’EE’NU THAT COME FROM THE HEBREW AH’NAH.  GOD PROPHESIED THAT THE SEED OF ABRAHAM WILL BE AFFLICTED FOUR HUNDRED YEARS.  THAT WAS FULFILLED IN EGYPT WHEN THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL WERE AFFLICTED FOUR HUNDRED YEARS IN EGYPTIAN SLAVERY.  FASTING NEVER COMES INTO PLAY HERE.

DEUTERONOMY 8.2, 3, 16

VERSE 2  AND YOU SHALL REMEMBER ALL THE WAY WHICH THE LORD YOUR GOD LED YOU THESE FORTY YEARS IN THE WILDERNESS TO HUMBLE YOU, AND TO TEST YOU, TO KNOW WHAT WAS IN YOUR HEART WHETHER YOU WOULD KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS OR NOT.

VERSE 3  AND HE HUMBLED YOU, AND GAVE YOU HUNGER, AND FED YOU WITH MANNA WHICH YOU DID NOT KNOW, NEITHER DID YOUR FATHERS KNOW, THAT MAN DOES NOT LIVE BY BREAD ONLY BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF THE LORD DOES MAN LIVE.

VERSE 16  WHO FED YOU IN THE WILDERNESS WITH MANNA WHICH YOUR FATHERS DID NOT KNOW IN ORDER TO HUMBLE YOU, AND TO TEST YOU, TO DO YOU GOOD AT YOUR LATTER END.

THE WORDS HUMBLE YOU, AND HUMBLED YOU IN THESE VERSES COME FROM THE HEBREW AH’NAH THAT NEVER MEAN TO FAST, BUT TO BE HUMBLED, TO SUBMIT TO THE LORD, TO OBEY EVERY WORD THE LORD SPEAKS.

RESPECTIVELY IN THE ORDER, HUMBLE YOU, AND HUMBLED YOU IN HEBREW ARE  AH’NO’TEH’KHAH AND VY’AH’NEH’KHAH, AND AH’NO’TEH’KHAH.  ALL FROM THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH, MEANING TO HUMBLE YOURSELF.  SUBMIT TO GOD AND OBEY HIM, EVERY WORD HE SPEAKS.

LET’S AGAIN LOOK AT GOD’S LAWS FOR YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT IN LEVITICUS 23.27, 29, 32.

LEVITICUS 23.27  AND YOU SHALL AFFLICT  IN HEBREW IS V’EE’NEE’TEHM THAT COMES FROM THE HEBREW WORD AH’NAH THAT MEANS, AND YOU SHALL HUMBLE.  YOU SHALL HUMBLE YOUR SOULS AND SUBMIT TO GOD BY OBEYING HIM.

THE HEBREW WORDS IN THIS SCRIPTURE DO NOT MEAN TO FAST, BUT RATHER SUBMIT TO GOD AND OBEY HIM.

AND SUBMITTING TO GOD IS HAVING ATONEMENT FOR YOUR SINS.  IT IS THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.  BECAUSE THE BIBLE SAYS, ALL HAVE BEEN CONCEIVED IN SIN.  AND SIN IS VIOLATING THE LAW OF MOSES.  THUS EVERYBODY HAS BROKEN TORAH, THE LAW OF MOSES.  THEREFORE EVERYONE IS REQUIRED TO HAVE ATONEMENT FOR THEIR SINS.

TODAY, ATONEMENT CAN ONLY BE MADE THROUGH FAITH IN THE JEWISH MESSIAH YESHUA WHO IS GOD ALMIGHTY, HA SHEM WHOSE DEATH AS A HUMAN BEING, AND HIS SHED BLOOD IS GOD’S OFFERING FOR YOUR SINS.  ISAIAH 53.10

AND HAVING FAITH IN THE JEWISH MESSIAH YESHUA IS AH’NAH, BEING HUMBLE, SUBMITTING TO GOD AND OBEYING HIM.  FOR THE BLOOD OF YOUR MESSIAH MAKES ATONEMENT FOR YOUR SOUL.  THAT IS TORAH.  LEVITICUS 17.11, ISAIAH 53.10

LEVITICUS 17.8, 9, 11  HEBREW BIBLE PSALM 51.7, CHRISTIAN BIBLE PSALM 51.5, HEBREW BIBLE ISAIAH 9.5, CHRISTIAN BIBLE ISAIAH 9.6, ISAIAH 53.10, HEBREW BIBLE MICAH 5.1, CHRISTIAN BIBLE MICAH 5.2, THE NEW TESTAMENT, JOHN 12.45, JOHN 14.9

LEVITICUS 23.29  NOT AFFLICTED IN HEBREW IS  LO’TEH’OO’NEH THAT COMES FROM THE HEBREW  AH’NAH  THAT MEANS, NOT HUMBLED, OR DOES NOT SUBMIT TO GOD.  THAT PERSON SHALL BE CUT OFF FROM HIS PEOPLE.

GOD WILL NEVER CUT ANYONE OFF FOR NOT FASTING, BUT GOD WILL CUT PEOPLE OFF FOR NOT SUBMITTING TO HIM.

LEVITICUS 23.32  AND YOU SHALL AFFLICT IN HEBREW IS VEH’EE’NEE’TEHM, THAT IS FROM THE HEBREW AH’NAH, MEANING, AND YOU SHALL HUMBLE.  AND YOU SHALL HUMBLE YOURSELF AND SUBMIT TO EVERY WORD SPOKEN BY GOD.

I THINK OF THE PROPHET SAMUEL’S WORDS.  “HAS THE LORD AS GREAT DELIGHT IN BURNT OFFERINGS AND SACRIFICES AS IN OBEYING THE VOICE OF THE LORD.  BEHOLD, TO OBEY IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE, AND TO OBEY THAN THE FAT OF RAMS.”

TO OBEY GOD IS BETTER THAN FASTING.  TO OBEY EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS IN THE BIBLE IS WHAT GOD REQUIRES OF YOU AND ALL MANKIND.

1 SAMUEL 15.22, ECCLESIASTES 12.13

THE HEBREW WORDS FOR FASTING ARE STOOM AND STOME.

LET’S LOOK AT THREE SCRIPTURES ABOUT FASTING.

2 SAMUEL 12.16  AND DAVID SOUGHT GOD FOR THE CHILD AND DAVID FASTED A FAST.

IN HEBREW, VAH’YAH’STAHM  DAH’VEED STOME.  MEANING, DAVID FASTED A FAST.  BOTH HEBREW WORDS, VAH’YAH’STAHM AND STOME MEAN FAST.

JUDGES 20.26  THEN ALL THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, EVEN ALL THE PEOPLE WENT UP AND CAME TO BETH EL, THE HOUSE OF GOD, AND WEPT AND SAT THERE BEFORE THE LORD AND FASTED THAT DAY UNTIL EVENING, AND OFFERED BURNT OFFERINGS AND PEACE OFFERINGS BEFORE THE LORD.

THE HEBREW  VAH’YAH’STOO’MU  FROM THE HEBREW STOOM  MEANS FASTED.

BUT THE WORDS OF THE PROPHET ZECHARIAH SUM IT ALL UP THAT SUBMITTING TO GOD BY OBEYING HIM IS NOT ONLY FAR SUPERIOR TO FASTING, BUT SUBMITTING TO GOD AND OBEYING EVERY WORD HE SPEAKS IN THE BIBLE IS WHAT GOD REQUIRES OF YOU.

ZECHARIAH 7.5  SPEAK TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE LAND, AND TO THE PRIESTS, SAYING, WHEN YOU FASTED AND MOURNED IN THE FIFTH AND SEVENTH MONTH, EVEN THOSE SEVENTY YEARS, DID YOU TRULY FAST TO ME, EVEN TO ME?  (THINK ON THESE WORDS)

YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT FALLS IN THE SEVENTH MONTH.  AND APPARENTLY THE JEWISH PEOPLE, WHILE THEY WERE IN BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY SOME 2,500 YEARS AGO FOR SEVENTY YEARS, FASTED ON YOM KIPPUR, THE DAY OF ATONEMENT.

HOWEVER IF THE PEOPLE WERE TAUGHT TO HUMBLE THEMSELVES BEFORE THE LORD ON YOM KIPPUR, AND SUBMIT TO EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS, THE PEOPLE CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE FASTED TO HA SHEM, THE LORD THEIR GOD. IN FACT, GOD NEVER WOULD HAVE EXILED HIS JEWISH PEOPLE HAD THEY SUBMITTED THEMSELVES TO THE LORD AND LIVED BY EVERY WORD HE SPOKE.

BECAUSE WHEN YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE IN SUBMISSION TO THE LORD, LIVING BY EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS, THE LORD YOUR GOD WILL ALWAYS BE ON YOUR HEART 24/7 IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.  BECAUSE YOU LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND YOU HUMBLE YOURSELF AND SUBMIT TO EVERY WORD GOD SPEAKS IN THE BIBLE.

AND TO PROVE AGAIN THAT THE LORD YOUR GOD REQUIRES YOU TO SUBMIT TO EVERY WORD OF GOD ABOVE FASTING, LET’S READ ZECHARIAH 7.5-14 FOCUSING ON VERSES 12-14.

ZECHARIAH 7.5-11

ZECHARIAH 7.12-14  AND THEY MADE THEIR HEARTS AN ADAMANT STONE (UTTERLY UNYIELDING TO GOD) FROM OBEYING TORAH, THE LAW OF MOSES, AND THE WORDS WHICH THE LORD OF HOSTS HAS SENT BY HIS SPIRIT BY THE FORMER PROPHETS.  THEREFORE CAME GREAT WRATH FROM THE LORD OF HOSTS.

THUS IT CAME TO PASS, THAT AS HE, GOD ALMIGHTY, CRIED, AND THEY WOULD NOT HEAR, SO THEY CRIED AND I WOULD NOT HEAR, SAITH THE LORD OF HOSTS.

BUT I SCATTERED THEM WITH A WHIRLWIND AMONG ALL THE NATIONS TO WHOM THEY DID NOT KNOW.  SO THE LAND (OF ISRAEL) IS DESOLATE BEHIND THEM FROM PASSING AND FROM RETURNING FOR THEY LAID THE PLEASANT LAND DESOLATE.  (BECAUSE OF THEIR DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD)

SO IN SUMMARY, WHEN YOU LIVE BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF THE LORD WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE, YOU WILL NEVER HAVE WRATH FROM THE LORD OF HOSTS.  BUT RATHER THE LORD YOUR GOD WILL LOVE YOU WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE, AND HE WILL GIVE YOU LIFE, HEALTH, AND ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN.

Shalom,

Ira Weinstein
